Accessible Garden: Access Oasis
Kate founded Access Oasis in September 2022, because gardening should be accessible to everyone. The earth, food and flowers are for everyone, and the structures we build to grow them should be accessible. Especially since the start of COVID-19, disabled people have needed outdoor spaces to grow together more than ever.
There are currently no accessible community gardens in Northwestern Queens, and Kate has rallied her community to change that. More than a dozen organizers/volunteers and 150 neighbors have signed on to make Access Oasis a reality by Astoria Park (NW corner of 21st St & Hoyt Ave N). The team started preparing and planting their future home in Fall 2023, and expects to open to the public fully in Spring 2024.
When Access Oasis opens, it will be an open-air community space for disability rights education & programming.
